Summary
A combined archaeological/anthropological/ecological survey of a rarely visited area in the north eastern Simpson Desert. This trek will be held in association with traditional owners, Mr Lindsay Bookie and family, Atnetye Aboriginal Land Trust.

The area we will visit has an important significance to the Bookie family and was occupied as a permanent camp for quite some time in the 19th Century. Both Lindsay and our resident archaeologist, Dr Mike Smith (National Museum of Australia), feel it is important to document the area from an archaeological and anthropological perspective.

The country is a mixture of river flat, rocky outcrop, claypan, sand dunes and spinifex. We intend to establish a base camp for 8 days which will provide a great opportunity to conduct a diverse and extensive survey - bats, ants, reptiles, fungus, mosses, fossils, birds, mammals etc. We will use the camel team to explore and survey around two rocky outcrops which cover an area of approximately 15 square kilometres including the surrounding river flats and dune corridors.

The substantial evidence of aboriginal occupation of the area, which we would expect to unearth, will add to our combined knowledge of how indigenous people lived in, and interacted with, the wider desert environment.

Members of Lindsay's family will camp with us for the duration of the survey, interpreting the sites of cultural importance as well as demonstrating bushtucker skills and pointing out the different types of flora which are used for bush medicine.
